A music and dance benefit for Dance Your Dreams!
Join us for a very special performance to benefit Merrimack Hall's weekly Dance Your Dreams! program.
In this unique benefit performance, Valley Dance Theatre dancers will collaborate with cellist Nicholas Gold to Bach's Suite No. 1. Nicholas will also perform solo pieces to the music of John Corigliano, Kolday, Paganini, Mark O'Connor, and others. Valley Dance Theatre will also perform original choreography in the styles of classical ballet, jazz, modern, and tap.
Nicholas Gold is a 23-year-old cellist, is a native of Alabama, and attended the University of Massachusetts. He has won competitions and awards throughout the South and in the New England United States. The Classical Voice of New England describes his playing as “… precise and assured, seeming impeccable…He’s clearly a musician to watch.” He has been awarded as a national finalist in the Music Teacher’s National Association and American String Teachers Association solo competitions and in 2004, he was named Brevard Music Center’s “Outstanding Young Artist.” He has appeared as a guest artist with the renowned Lark String Quartet, University of Massachusetts Orchestra, and the Kent/Blossom Chamber Orchestra. He has studied with cellists Astrid Schween, Carlton McCreery and Bernard Greenhouse. Nicholas lives in Nashville and works for the Nashville String Machine among other professional ensembles. Nicholas plays on a fine instrument generously loaned to him by the Carlsen Cello Foundation.
Valley Dance Theatre opened its doors in August 2004 under the direction of Leigh-Anne Beam and since then has attracted students from throughout the greater Huntsville-Madison area. While at UA she performed with the Alabama Repertory Dance Theatre, studied twice on scholarship at the American Ballet Theatre Summer Intensive, and was accepted to study at the mecca of modern dance, Jacob's Pillow. She was a finalist in Panoply's Choreography Competition both in '01 (Desplazar) and '02 (Habanera) and received an honorable mention in '03 (Matrix). Since opening in 2004, Valley Dance Theatre's company dancers have received numerous platinum, gold, and overall high scores and choreography awards.
