Evening of Dance

On January 9 and 10, 2009, Merrimack Hall will present its Second Annual Evening of Dance at 7:30 p.m. each evening. This unique event is a showcase of many of North Alabama’s premiere dance organizations.  Participation in the Evening of Dance is by invitation only, and we are proud that this year, we will present work from the following area dance organizations:

    • Alabama Youth Ballet
    • North Alabama Dance Center
    • The Dance Company
    • Heidi’s School of Dance
    • My Girls Dance Studio
    • Southern Sass Studio of Dance
    • Lee High School Dance Department
    • Dance Theater of Huntsville
    • Ann’s Studio of Dance
    • Steps of Faith
    • Community Ballet
    • Susan’s Studio of Dance
    • NEEMA
    • Academy of Classic Art

In addition to these amazing dance educators, Merrimack Hall has chosen Sarah Milberger as our Emerging Choreographer.  Sarah is a senior at Huntsville High School and a member of Ann’s Company Dancers at Ann’s Studio of Dance.  Merrimack Hall offered Sarah the opportunity to select her own dancers, music and costuming and to work with a lighting designer and audio engineer to present her first original work.  Ballroom Dance will be presented at the Evening of Dance, with an exciting dance from Rocket City Ballroom.  Several independent choreographers will also be participating.

The Special Guest Artist at this event will be Sabra Johnson, winner of the wildly popular Fox Television Series So You Think You Can Dance.  Sabra conducted a sold-out workshop at Merrimack Hall in the summer of 2008, and joins us again for Evening of Dance, where she will present a special performance for our audience.  Sabra will conduct two master classes on Saturday, January 10 and Sunday, January 11, 2009.

The highlight of the event is sure to be the debut of Merrimack Hall’s Dance Your Dreams! students on stage!

These students, ages 4-7, live with a variety of physical and developmental challenges.  Through this remarkable program, children who might not be able to participate in mainstream dance education are assisted by a team of specially trained volunteers.  Our students live with challenges such as leukemia, Cerebral Palsy, hearing impairment, developmental delays, and Down’s Syndrome among others.  Our students and their volunteers will be performing to “Singin’ In The Rain,” in what we know will be a moving and memorable dance number.

Merrimack Hall selected dancers from an open community-wide audition to participate in a special piece of choreography for the Evening of Dance.  Stay tuned to our web site for further details on this piece, which features dancers from 11 different dance organizations.
