Mary Katherine Smartt: Huntsville's Own Rockette

Mary Katherine Smartt, Huntsville’s own Rockette, taught four Master Classes at Merrimack Hall. Mary Katherine trained right here in Huntsville at North Alabama Dance Center, under the direction of Barbara Ellen Smartt, her mother, for 16 years and has been teaching at NADC since 2005. Mary Katherine auditioned and was hired for the world renowned Rockettes in August 2007. She performed 110 shows at Radio City Music Hall in NYC as a Rockette in the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. Mary Katherine’s Television credits include the 2007 Radio City Christmas Spectacular on NBC and an appearance on Food Network’s Ace of Cakes as a Rockette.

The Master Classes were for ages 10 and up, designed to cover a variety of dance styles such as jazz and musical theatre. She also shared many of the “ins and outs” of being a professional Broadway dancer. The last class of the day was for Adults only.

Along with the Master Classes, there was also a showcase at the end of the day in the Performance Hall. This showcase featured the students from the workshops performing the routines they learned that day.
