The Grascals
ARCHIVE: February 1, 2008
As their two Grammy®-nominated releases, The Grascals (2005) and Long List Of Heartaches (2006), prove, whether they’re digging into one of their original songs and instrumentals, reworking a bluegrass classic like “Will You Be Loving Another Man,” interpreting bluegrass-country songwriter Harley Allen’s award-winning “Me And John And Paul” or urging guest Steve Wariner on to a blistering guitar solo on his “Hoedown In Motown,” the Grascals’ rare musical empathy gives them an unerring ear for just the right touch to illuminate each offering’s deepest spirit.
In just one year the Grascals moved from winning the International Bluegrass Music Association’s (IBMA) Emerging Artist of the Year award (2005) to earning its top Entertainer of the Year honor (2006), while scoring a Song of the Year trophy, entries in myriad critics’ “best of the year” lists and a set of personal appearances that would be the envy of almost any entertainer. In 2007 they did it again when they won the IBMA Entertainer of the Year award.
These musicians crossed paths over more than two decades in bluegrass ensembles like the Osborne Brothers, Larry Cordle & Lonesome Standard Time, the Sidemen and New Tradition. The Grascals have been able to draw on legends like Bobby Osborne, George Jones, the Jordanaires, Lloyd Green, Paul Craft and more for songs and for performances in the studio and on stage. Thanks to those experiences, The Grascals embody a profound grasp of country and bluegrass tradition that made them a natural choice for Dolly Parton to turn to for recording and tour support soon after the group was created.
The Grascals may be relatively new on the scene, but they are an ensemble of unsurpassed cohesion and focused artistic direction.

“ . . .one of my favorite new bands of any genre of music.”
—Dierks Bentley
“I am so proud of The Grascals. They are one of the best bluegrass bands I’ve ever heard. They are all so very talented as vocalists and instrumentalists. Their new CD is one of the greatest albums I’ve ever listened to, and the fact it’s their first just tells you how talented they really are. I was very proud to get to sing on ‘Viva Las Vegas’ with them. They have been opening my shows for a while and people just love ‘em.”—Dolly Parton

“The Grascals— to me they should be called the “MASTERCALS,” as I feel that each of these guys is a master in his own right. Folks, these boys are the REAL thing.”
—Mac Wiseman
